What is National Family Day Care Week?

Running from May 1-7, National Family Day Care Week is a chance for the family day care sector to unite and celebrate the amazing work of educators and approved services in shaping the lives of more than 212,820 children around the country.

The week long community event is an excellent opportunity to raise the image and profile of family day care as an integral part of Australia’s early childhood education and care sector.

It will also provide a platform for approved family day care services to collectively advocate for quality early childhood education and school age care.


Do I/we have to take part? / Why should I/we take part?

Taking part in and sharing National Family Day Care week with the broader community helps educators and approved services to highlight to the community the role of play in children’s learning and how this is supported every day in family day care.

By getting involved participants have an opportunity to celebrate and share the many unique benefits of family day care.

The suggested activities in the Programming Ideas Guide are all great ways to entice local media to cover National Family Day Care Week and raise the image and profile of the sector.


My service isn’t doing anything, can I still be involved?

Yes. If your service isn’t hosting an event there are still lots of ways to be involved in National Family Day Care Week.

Educators can host celebration at their home and invite all the children and their families to come and be a part of the fun.

Throughout the week, there are lots of ways to encourage, develop and celebrate every child’s own individual star qualities.

Some suggested programming ideas include:

  • Evening under the stars
  • Superstar fancy dress
  • Star themed arts and crafts
  • Allstar sports day

These ideas presented in the Programming Ideas Guide are simply suggestions to get you started – you may have your own ideas about how to celebrate National Family Day Care Week.

Or better still, use the examples as starting points and be guided by the children’s interests and ideas about how they want to celebrate National Family Day Care Week.


What if it’s raining or cloudy?

If you have planned an ‘Evening Under the Stars’ and Mother Nature delivers some nasty weather we encourage you to still go ahead with the event.

If possible, have a safe and protected wet weather venue organised in advance so you can easily move your guests there if needed – it might be inside the approved service, under a pergola or in your garage or lounge room.

There are still lots of activities you can offer in the event of bad weather:

  • make an artwork exhibition of the children’s wishes
  • perform a song, dance or presentation
  • invite the children to share their wishes with the audience
  • host a dinner or afternoon tea

How do I share my pictures/videos if I don’t have Facebook?

If you haven’t got access to Facebook, there are a number of other ways you can still share your events.

We suggest asking your service or the children’s families to help you share your videos and photographs on our Facebook page. Alternativey you can email your content to marketing@fdca.com.au and we will happily share them on your behalf.
